wine cellars

I am reading Walden by Henry David Thoreau for my Literature class and the part where he mentions munitions of peace confused me. So if anyone can help me clarify the meaning of this would be great! The phrase is taken from the line, “Many of our houses, both public and private, with their almost innumerable apartments, their huge halls and their cellars for the storage of wines and other munitions of peace, appear to be extravagantly large for their inhabitants.”

My wife (the silly woman) has joined a charity which encourages its members to have the local poor round for meals. So anyway, it’s our turn tomorrow and I was just wondering about a few things to do with these peasants
